Choose the Santa Barbara Court Route

For Santa Barbara County criminal court records, use the Santa Barbara Superior Court. The court provides public access to nonconfidential, nonsealed records, but the online tools and the records counter do not expose every criminal document in the same way.

Pick the access method that fits the record

Need Start here Why
Basic case activity Records window / courthouse public-access terminals The court currently says an online criminal index is unavailable; terminals are listed at Figueroa, Miller and Lompoc
A document or copy Superior Court records/copy process The court controls its own case files and copy access

Online case information and the underlying Santa Barbara file are not the same thing

The court’s current Court Records instructions say an online criminal index is not available. For a criminal file, visit the Records window or a public-access terminal at the Figueroa, Miller or Lompoc division. An online register for an eligible case is only a navigation aid to the underlying file. If the task requires the wording of a filed document, a disposition, or a certified copy, use the court’s records and copy process instead of relying only on the summary visible online.

Confidentiality is another boundary. Courts can keep some material confidential, sealed, or otherwise unavailable through ordinary public access. That means a search result with limited detail should not be filled in from assumptions. Record the case number, court location, and the exact document needed, then use the court’s instructions for the access level that applies to that document.

Useful details before you request a court record

  • ✓
    Case number

The fastest way to distinguish one court matter from another.

  • ✓
    Defendant name

Useful when the case number is unknown, but same-name identity still needs care.

  • ✓
    Approximate filing or event date

Helps narrow older records and similarly named cases.

  • ✓
    Court location if known

Santa Barbara County matters may be handled at different court locations.

Preserve the case identifier through the whole search

Once you have the Santa Barbara case number, use it consistently when requesting copies or comparing docket information. Names can change or repeat; the case number ties the public index, records counter, and requested document back to the same court matter. If a record is unavailable online, that is a signal to use the court’s records process, not evidence that the case or document does not exist.

Use the court’s Copy Request Form: select CRIMINAL, supply the case number if known or the requested name/offense-year details, identify the document and choose certified or non-certified copies. Check the Court Records page for the division holding the file. For South County, submit the form in person or by mail to Superior Court, ATTN: Records, 118 E. Figueroa Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101, or email [email protected]. Do not email payment-card information; email requests receive an invoice. Certified copies cannot be delivered by email. Allow up to 14 business days for South County processing, longer for off-site files or files in a courtroom.

The court’s May 2026 form lists $0.50 per copied page and $40 certification per document plus copying. A search exceeding 10 minutes costs $15; the invoice cost-recovery fee is $1. Postage/envelope charges depend on delivery, and a card transaction adds 2.9% plus $0.60. These are separate charges, not one flat total. For mailed South County requests, follow the court’s check and return-envelope instructions on the Court Records page; its $175 not-to-exceed check notation is an authorization ceiling, not a fixed copy price.

Court access is not the same as a criminal-history background check
A court file tells you about that court case. It should not be described as a complete statewide or nationwide criminal-history record.
